MedStar Crews see surge in patients struggling to breath during Ozone Action Alert Days

If you think air quality alerts don’t matter … think again. Over the past week, MedStar crews have treated a surge of people struggling to breathe.

"We went back and looked at our responses for patients that were complaining of difficulty breathing," says Matt Zavadsky, Chief Transformation Officer with MedStar.

"Last week there weren't any Ozone Alert Action Days, tis week we've had three or four. And we've responded to 24 percent more breathing difficulty calls this week than we did last week."

Zavadsky says it’s a good idea to stay indoors on Ozone Alert Action Days. According to the American Lung Association, there are four groups of people especially vulnerable to the effects of breathing ozone: kids and teens, people older than 65, people working or exercising outside and those with lung diseases.
