A new bond package at Mesquite ISD will bring some changes as students head back to class this week.
Superintendent Dr. Angel Rivera told the Mid-Morning Mike Check on KRLD that they were able to make safety and security upgrades at some of the elementary school playgrounds because of the $600-million bond.
North Mesquite High School will also be getting a facelift.
"And then because we are exploding in the south side of Mesquite, with the new Solterra subdivision among others, we're completing classrooms expansions at Gentry Elementary," Dr. Rivera said. "And more expansions to come in the south side."
Mesquite is also going to try to enforce the new statewide ban on cell phone use at school by trusting students with their own devices.
Dr. Rivera says that way they can more quickly access them in an emergency and they did not want the ban to feel like punishment for the students.
Mesquite ISD will also roll out a new leadership program for 3rd graders districtwide.
"How do you lead yourself so you can chart your path in school, own your learning, and then become anything you want to become," Dr. Rivera said.
