Meta is donating a pair of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to every legally blind veteran in the United States, a program expected to reach more than 130,000 eligible recipients.
The tech company announced the initiative Friday in partnership with the Blinded Veterans Association, providing the smart glasses at no cost along with hands-on training, monthly webinars and guides to help veterans integrate the assistive technology into daily life. The glasses use built-in cameras and AI to read text aloud, describe surroundings, identify objects and assist with navigation, offering greater independence for those with vision loss.
The effort was inspired in part by U.S. Army veteran Don Overton, who collaborated with Meta’s wearables team to enhance features for blind users. Eligible veterans, many of whom lost vision during or after service, can request their pair through the Blinded Veterans Association at bva.org/glasses. Veteran organizations can also apply via TechSoup to support distribution.
This represents one of Meta’s largest device donations to date and comes ahead of America’s 250th birthday as a way to honor veterans’ service. Partners include Homes for Our Troops, Tunnel to Towers, Lighthouse Guild and others. Distribution will leverage VA Blind Rehabilitation Centers where possible to ensure proper support.
The program highlights growing use of consumer AI technology for accessibility, potentially transforming how blind veterans interact with the world. Veterans interested in the glasses are encouraged to visit the BVA website for details and eligibility.
