Saturday, riders will fill AT&T Stadium for Monster Energy AMA Supercross. This is the seventh race of Supercross' 17 race season and the start of the East Division 250 class.
"We draw a great crowd here. This is one of our better markets of the entire year," says Supercross' Joe Weber.
Weber says Supercross drew about 60,000 people last year at AT&T Stadium.
"These guys live off the fandom and adrenaline," he says. "They can still hear you even though their motorcycles are loud."
"'Jerry World' is always something special," says rider Grant Harlan. "The expectations, the star, the hype, it's probably the biggest race of the year for our Supercross season in terms of fan turnout and excitement level."
Harlan is from Decatur, Texas. Despite being close to home, he says he has to tune the crowd out to focus on the track.
"Usually, I don't pay much attention to it," he says. "The moments I can hear and pay attention to is when something happens with the lead battle. We're so focused on what's going on. This track is super-technical."
Harlan says AT&T Stadium has a tight track and requires technical racing which can be more exciting for races and fans. He says the stadium also provides some advantages.
"Having the all-around lighting and no shadows is really nice," he says. "Sometimes with this dirt, it almost looks dark or a little dim, so it can be slightly challenging with the dirt conditions we have."
But he says the lighting and roofed stadium make conditions more predictable. Coty Schock, from Charlotte, North Carolina, says the lights help riders plan.
"Everything is more consistent, the track, the moisture in the dirt are more consistent, You don't have any outside factors affecting you," he says. "Under the lights is different. The lights are on all day whereas when you're at an outdoor stadium, the lights aren't on and then comes nighttime and then they throw them on, which tends to throw it off a little bit."
Schock races in the 250 East Division, so this is his first race of the season.
"For us, we get the first race jitters out of the way," he says. "Arlington is always a packed stadium, so it's going to be really exciting when it comes to opening ceremonies. The nerves are really going to set in, but for us, we're ready to go racing. We've been training so much, having so many laps on the offseason, we finally get to do what we've been training for. I love this office, this is my type of office."
Supercross will honor veterans Saturday night. Each motorcycle has military themed graphics and themes to pay tribute.
"This is a special race. We are dedicating this race to military," says Supercross' Weber. "This is one of our best markets for sure. We have a rich history here. We have a rich history here. This stadium is the most premier of the premier. I pay attention to the little things, all the amentities behind the scenes. This is one of the elite."
