Nasdaq, a stock exchange based in New York, will open a regional headquarters in Dallas. Gov. Greg Abbott attended an announcement Tuesday.

"I want to express my gratitude and provide the recognition the Nasdaq deserves for making such a huge, game-changing announcement," Abbott said.

Nasdaq Chief Executive Adena Friedman said more than 200 companies listed on the exchange are based in Texas. She said Nasdaq also had 800 clients in Texas who use the index's technology services.

"Our commitments in Texas and to our clients underscore our belief in the state's continued role as a global powerhouse for innovation and growth," she said.

Friedman said the headquarters will serve as a "hub for Nasdaq clients and the wider community and will serve as a common meeting space to celebrate the leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators who call Texas home."

"We're dedicated to continuing to be a part of this community, fostering an ecosystem where our clients and the wider Texas community will thrive," she said.

In January, the Texas Stock Exchange filed for approval by the Securities Exchange Commission. The first trades could come next year.

In February, the New York Stock Exchange said it would move its Chicago branch to Dallas.

"Texas has become the home of capital in the United States, and now, it's just a natural evolution for Texas to become a home of capital markets in the United States," Abbott said Tuesday.

Abbott said interest from financial services companies shows the state's economy has become more diverse since the savings and loan crisis and low energy prices of the 1980s. He said Texas has become a leader in space exploration, artificial intelligence and semiconductor production.

"There is not a more diversified state economy anywhere in the United States of America," Abbott said.
