Officials with the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) have dedicated Bois d'Arc Lake in Fannin County. It's the first new major reservoir built in Texas in more than 30 years.

The lake will supply water to the growing population of north Texas. The North Texas Municipal Water District has been working on the project for nearly 20 years.

"Bois d'Arc Lake will provide essential access to safe, reliable water for future generations of North Texans," said NTMWD Board President Jack May.

The lake is not yet ready for boating or other forms of recreation. The water level needs to rise several feet before it will be safe for boating. Officials with the NTMWD expect the lake could reach that level in the spring of 2023, depending on the amount of rain in north Texas in the next few months.

The NTMWD is also working on a new water treatment plant in the town of Leonard in Fannin County. It is scheduled to go on-line next year and will initially be able to treat 70-million gallons per day. The plant is designed to allow for expansion in the future to increase its capacity to 280-million gallons per day.

Members of the NTMWD that will benefit from the project include McKinney, Allen, Frisco, Plano, Wylie, Richardson, Garland and Mesquite. Cities that are customers of the NTMWD include Little Elm, Prosper and Sunnyvale.
