No mask mandate on the horizon for Tarrant County

Despite pleas from some residents and even other commissioners, the Tarrant County judge says their hands are tied concerning a mask mandate.

As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise in the county, some residents urged the commissioners to enact a mask mandate that would cover schools as well as county buildings. Commissioner Roy Brookes wants the county to do more.

"We need to press the envelope as far as we can," Brookes says.

But county judge Glen Whitley says they are agents of the governor and must follow his executive order.

Meanwhile, Health director Vinny Teneja says they will continue to see a big increase in new cases and hospitalizations for some time, as schools get back in session and residents return to normal behavior.

"The good news is this time around, we know more. Vaccines and masks can beat this thing down," Teneja says.
