A non-profit has started construction on 25 homes in Ellis County that would be used by people who are homeless. OurCalling is using $15 million in donations for the first phase of its project just east of Ferris.
OurCalling used the money to buy 280 acres of land and start construction on the homes. Each house is small with a living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
"We are building a tiny home community specifically for those with long-term needs," says OurCalling Chief Executive Wayne Walker.
Walker says the non-profit has helped 1,109 people exit homelessness so far this year. He says some move into housing; others move to rehab or recovery programs.
Walker says the homes near Ferris will go to the elderly or others who have comprehensive needs. The organization is building 25 homes now and hopes to build a total of 500 over time.
"Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself after He said love the Lord with all you've got," he says. "We are striving to do that every day."
The land covers 280 acres. OurCalling says homes will be built on 120 acres, and the rest will keep its trees, fields and three ponds to maintain habitats for deer, cattle and fish.
The campus will also have a grocery store, clinic, coffee shop, laundry facility and chapel. Walker says people will be able to get check-ups, mental health care and counseling.
"There are individuals who cannot care for themselves anymore," he says. "They don't have a nest egg to go sit in a retirement community, those who are struggling to care for their own self."
The first phase will also include construction of roads, utilities and support buildings like a community center. Scott Turner, a campaign co-chair, says the project in Ellis County could become a model to help non-profits in other parts of the country move people into permanent housing.
"I believe God will use this as a prototype as a great blessing for our country for how we can alleviate poverty," he says.
"OurCommunity" will not be considered transitional housing. The non-profit says these will be permanent homes for people who are elderly, have disabilities or specific needs.
Residents will pay a rent that will remain "very low." OurCalling says people will be able to use their benefits to pay rent, and they can also work in the community.
OurCalling is now raising $70 million for the remainder of the project. More information is available HERE.
