As triple-digit temperatures continue their hold on North Texas, the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center is extending its project to ensure people who work outside have access to water.
The center had planned to stop handing out hydration kits Tuesday but has extended the plan for another two weeks.
Hydration kits include water, ice, handheld fans, and sweatbands. The center is handing them out to first responders, lawn care workers, letter carriers, construction workers, and others who work outside.
"There's no need to be here if we can't be a support system to our neighbors," said Trina Terrell-Andrews, the chief executive of the Heroes Basketball Center.
The center has hosted mobile food pantries since the pandemic started and also offers classes, workshops, and community meeting space.
"That's one of the beauties we are able to do is make sure our kids and families are interfacing with one another, engaging with one another, and learning from one another," Terrell-Andrews said.
The kits are available first-come, first-serve. People will be asked to provide a work identification to receive one.
Hydration kits are handed out from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center at 1800 Bonnie View Rd, Dallas, Tx 75216. The center is also taking donations of bottled water.
Terrell-Andrews said volunteers are also going into neighborhoods to deliver kits to people working outside.
