The North Texas Food Bank is hosting a mobile pantry Friday at UNT Dallas. The drive-thru event will continue until 11 a.m.

Participants stay in their cars and will complete a form in line. Volunteers will then load a box of food into their trunk.

Friday morning, police were directing the flow of traffic through the parking lot and along University Hills Boulevard.

"We know summer is the hungriest time of the year," says North Texas Food Bank Chief Executive Trisha Cunningham. "Many families are also having to take care of those ten additional meals per school aged student in their household they would normally be receiving during the school day."

Cunningham says demand has stayed high as a result of inflation and high gas prices. She says the North Texas Food Bank worked with a consultant to find the zip codes with the greatest need so people would use less gas to reach them.

"Many may not be able to afford the gas to get to the pantry because they need that gas to get to their job," she says.

Mobile pantries are held at UNT Dallas one Friday a month. Cunningham says the food bank is also working with 400 other agencies to provide food but also workforce development and financial literacy.

"We're trying to help them get beyond what that reason is [for needing help] so they can thrive," she says. "Our community thrives when they thrive, too."
