Medical City Las Colinas performed a first for the entire Medical City system - an alternative to diabetic amputation.

The procedure is called a "Transverse bone transport system" creating a bone cut and fixation device helping to heal an ulcer instead of amputating the limb.

Hospital CEO Christina Mathis says now that they have done this successfully they want people to know about it. She calls it a game-changer.

"It kind of tricks your body into thinking that there's additional healing that is needed in that space," Mathis said.
"Sending additional resources within your own system to create the healing of that wound in that place."

62-year-old Jackie Smith is the first patient to receive the procedure at Medical City Las Colinas.

"I'm looking forward to being more active again with friends and family," she said in a statement.

The procedure can be used on people who suffer from diabetes as well as non-healing ulcers or poor circulation.

"There are many patients that may not know that this is a resource and something that is available to them as an option," Mathis said.
