As memories of former President Jimmy Carter pour in, one North Texas man has personal thoughts of the Carter family.

It was the Christmas break of John Gnann's first-grade year in school when his family moved to Plains Georgia, home of then-Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter. They not only moved to Plains, they moved to the house right next door to the Carters.

Gnann and his family spent years as friends of the family getting to know the man who would become the 39th President of the United States. He says the man was exactly as he appeared.

"He was very outgoing, what you see is what you get. He was also a very religious man although he didn't wear it on his cuff, he uses his actions to show his faith which is how he ended up doing what he's done."

He recalls the time then Governor Carter took he and his brother on a tour of the Carter peanut farm. He says Mr. Carter was amused that Gnann's younger brother was not impressed by the fields of plants, with no cattle or chickens.
