Cleanup is underway in Arkansas, where a devastatingly powerful tornado ripped through Friday night, killing several people and injuring many more.

Recovery will be a big job, and North Texans are on their way to help.

“We need prayers and we need financial support,” says Rand Jenkins, spokesperson for Texas Baptist Men.

Volunteers with TBM are already stationed near Little Rock, as well as in Wynn and northern parts of the state. Now, more help is on the way.

“What’s rolling out today? Chainsaw units, shower-laundry units, another generator, another kitchen, and more chaplains and volunteers to be able to support all the work that’s going on,” Jenkins says.

For the past week, TBM volunteers have been in Mississippi helping with tornado relief there. Jenkins says the damage was devastating, but different than it is in Arkansas.

“It’s a disaster. When tornadoes hit a more populous area, there’s such a concentrated amount of work per block,” Jenkins says. “Much different than the work in Mississippi .. while each is important.”

Other North Texas groups, like the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention relief team, which is headquartered in Grapevine, are also in Arkansas helping with relief efforts. They're currently handing out food to people whose homes have been destroyed, along with everything they own.
