We're now learning what likely caused a massive train derailment in south Fort Worth more than two years ago.
The NTSB says a weakened track structure and washout from flooding at Echo Lake are to blame for the derailment of the Union Pacific train carrying ethanol back on April 24, 2019.
The report, which was issued August 3rd, also blamed deferred maintenance of primary and emergency spillways at the lake, as well as an absence of dynamic weather reporting at Union Pacific.
The train consisted of three locomotives and 96 cars loaded with ethanol, and it was traveling at 26 MPH in the rain when it derailed shortly after midnight that day.
26 cars left the tracks, three of which leaked more than 65-thousand gallons of ethanol which subsequently ignited.
Three horses were killed in the fire, and several homes had to be evacuated.
