FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD)- It could take weeks to sort out all the reports from yesterday’s accident in Fort Worth. The Fort Worth police department is the lead agency, but other groups could conduct their own probes.

A State representative has called for the House Transportation Committee to look into the design of the highway. The National Transportation Safety Board says it is aware of the crash, but has not determined whether it will conduct its own investigation.

Multiple agencies could conduct investigations into the massive pileup in Fort Worth Thursday morning.  Fort Worth Police will conduct the lead into the wreck itself.  Police say it could take weeks to get statements from all of the witnesses and survivors.  Sifting through the facts and getting to the bottom could take significantly longer

Meantime there are other calls for separate probes.  State Representative Ramon Romero (D-Fort Worth) has contacted both the Texas House and Texas Senate chairmen of their respective transportation committees.  Romero is a critic of the design of the North Tarrant Express lanes, which are managed.  The lanes do not have shoulders and are dangerous, he said.

“At the very beginning, we had cars that stalled or no longer able to continue moving because of the ice on the road.  That caused a slowdown, caused other cars to have to stop.  And then the cars that could not stop, because of the ice.” Romero said.

He contends without shoulders and the downhill nature of the highway, there was little any of the drivers could do to stop on the ice.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it is aware of the crash but has not yet opened an investigation.

“It is possible  that we could look into it if the Office of Highway Safety determines it is appropriate.” said Keith Holloway, NTSB Spokesman.
