It's another honor for a beloved Texan, Dr Opal Lee, also known as the "grandmother of Juneteenth," she's going into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame.

The 96-year-old activist and a former educator, Opal Lee has largely been credited for helping make Juneteenth a national holiday in 2021.

Lee's goal was to raise awareness of the importance of Juneteenth in Texas, as the day commemorates June 19, 1865, when 2,000 Union soldiers announced the news of freedom to enslaved people in Galveston.

In a news release, Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he is recognizing Lee for her community service, advocacy and perseverance in promoting a message of unity and understanding.

The 2023 Texas Women's Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on November 9th in Austin.
