The company that owns the Comanche Peak nuclear power plant has filed an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to extend the permits for the plant. It has been operating since 1990. Unit 1 has a federal permit to operate through 2030, while Unit 2 has a permit to operate through 2033.

The request filed by Vistra, which owns Luminant, seeks to extend both of those permits by 20 years. Approval would keep Unit 2 of the plant operating through 2053.

"Comanche Peak is one of the lowest-cost and highest-performing nuclear power plants in the country and is a large, dispatchable source of carbon-free electricity," said Vistra President and CEO Jim Burke. "Renewing the licenses of this plant is critical for grid reliability."

Comanche Peak generates enough electricity to power 1.2 million Texas homes in normal conditions and 480,000 homes during periods of peak demand.
