Parade for South Oak Cliff High School football champions Saturday in Dallas

A parade will wind through Downtown Dallas Saturday morning as part of the celebration for South Oak Cliff High School's football team. The team beat Central Texas' Liberty Hill High School 23-14 at AT&T Stadium in December to win Dallas ISD's first state football championship since 1958.

"To the City of Dallas, we did this for you all just as much as ourselves," Coach Jason Todd said at a rally outside Dallas City Hall last week.

At the rally, Mayor Eric Johnson said he would declare January 22 "South Oak Cliff Day" in Dallas. He issued a proclamation Friday.

"It must be stated that the football players — practice after practice and game after game — persevered and overcame significant adversity both in and out of school to ultimately achieve this victory," the proclamation reads. "They have done the hard work to become not only better athletes, but to become even stronger young men, strengthening their character, faith, and self-confidence in the process, and inspiring the people of Dallas to certainly do the same"

The parade will begin at 10:30 Saturday morning at Main and Pearl, move west on Main, turn south at Griffin and east at Young Street, ending at the City Hall Plaza.

"We're so proud of all of you, and we are thrilled to celebrate this accomplishment with you," Johnson told the team at the rally.

"It's these kids who put in a lot of hard work, a lot of hard days and nights," Todd said.
