Keller--As e-bikes grow in popularity "we are seeing a deeply concerning rise in dangerous incidents," Keller police said in an online posting where they shared a video showing young riders ignoring traffic laws, riding recklessly, and fleeing from officers.
Here are the key state laws and local regulations passed by Keller city council in December:
- Age Limits: Texas law requires Class 3 e-bike riders to be at least 15 years old.
- Helmets: Keller city ordinances require helmets for all e-bike riders under 16.
- Trail Speeds: While e-bikes are allowed on Keller trails, they cannot exceed 15 mph.
- Distracted Riding: Keller ordinances prohibit wearing headphones, earbuds, or similar devices while operating an e-bike.
A Note on Fleeing & E-Motorcycles
- Evading police is NOT a game. Evading law enforcement in any vehicle—including an e-bike—is a serious offense. Under Texas law, it can result in a state felony charge.
- Know the difference: We are also seeing a rise in e-motorcycles (which look similar to e-bikes). E-motorcycles require a Class M license and registration, and they are strictly prohibited on sidewalks and trails.
What Happens Next?
Over the past several months, our officers have focused heavily on education and warnings to bring riders into compliance. Unfortunately, the dangerous behavior has continued. Moving forward, officers will be taking a firmer enforcement approach. Let’s work together to keep our kids and our streets safe.
