School district leaders worked to reassure parents Thursday that no decisions have been made about the fate of a top-performing Coppell ISD elementary school.
The Coppell ISD and the Bond Steering Committee have hinted Pinkerton Elementary School could be closed or repurposed under a bond package that would be put to a vote in May 2023.
Julie Waters has two children at Pinkerton and was one of the dozens of parents who attended Thursday's community dialogue in an effort to save the top-rated school.
"Its the oldest school in the district. There are many Pinkerton alumni. Its an institution. The teachers, staff, students and other parents are like families," she said.
Waters says this would be a devastating loss for Coppell ISD, which is already experiencing a huge number of students who are transferring out of the district.
The district insists nothing has been decided and issued the following statement.
"These parents are making assumptions that are simply not true. CISD is currently in a preliminary bond planning process with a Bond Committee, which serves in an advisory role to assist the district and the Board of Trustees to assess and prioritize district needs. CISD is being very transparent about this process and giving our community several opportunities for feedback, including surveys and a community dialogue session tonight, to rank program and facility priorities for a possible bond. . .
"What is taking place right now is community feedback opportunities on facility and program priorities. All this information is available on the CISD website at www.coppellisd.com/bond. We have encouraged parents with concerns to participate in the community dialogue and survey opportunities to prioritize the district's facility and program needs. They also will have an opportunity to participate in another survey to rank these priorities."
The district insists it will hear from the community before any final plans are made. Pinkerton parents said the fact that the district is considering closing the school is unacceptable and they promise to fight to keep it open.
The next school board meeting is Monday night.
