A Parker County Sheriff's Office recruit battling COVID-19 has lost his battle against the deadly virus.
Kyle Squires became seriously ill with COVID-19 this past fall as he was in the process of becoming a Parker County Sheriff's deputy.
During his hospitalization, the sheriff's office organized a bowling tournament to raise money for his treatment.
Squires passed away over the weekend.
Squires and his family had recently moved to Peaster from Seattle; and at the outset of his PCSO training, he was paired with Cpl. Brice Gallasso, who had also moved from out of state.
"I came down here almost six years ago from Wyoming - I was a deputy sheriff up there," Cpl. Gallasso tells KRLD News. "And I have a personal knowledge of what the process is like to go through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to get your Texas peace officer license coming from another state."
Gallasso and Squires quickly bonded.
"He came and did a ride-along with me last June, and we maintained contact," Gallasso recalls, "and I explained to him what he needed to do to get the process started with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement."
Gallasso says he will fondly remember Squires.
"He was a very devoted family man," says Gallasso. "He was a devoted husband. He was proud of his kids, he talked about his kids. He was just a good person, and you could tell that right away - a very genuine, good person."
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
