Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is launching an investigation into the University of North Texas, accusing the school of failing to address what he calls “radical leftist violence” after students reportedly celebrated the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Paxton announced the investigation Thursday, saying his office will examine whether UNT tolerated or enabled student groups promoting violent rhetoric.
In a letter to university leaders, he urged administrators to discipline or expel students who participated in the behavior.
The move follows reports that some UNT students cheered news of Kirk’s death during on-campus discussions and online posts.
The university has not confirmed whether disciplinary action has been taken but said it is cooperating with the attorney general’s office.
Paxton said his investigation will focus on whether the school violated state laws protecting public safety and civil rights. The University of North Texas has not issued further comment.
