Pediatricians in North Texas are reporting a surge in flu and other respiratory illnesses among children just as students return to school following the holiday break.
Dr. Cesar Termulo, a Dallas pediatrician, emphasized that flu shots remain one of the most effective ways to prevent the flu or reduce the severity of symptoms. He urged parents to keep children home from school if they have a fever or a persistent cough that disrupts sleep or daily activities.
"Many children are coming in with a high fever due to the flu that actually causes seizures. "If one has asthma and you get the flu, they can have an asthma attack," he said.
In addition to vaccination, Termulo recommended plenty of rest and nutritious, comforting foods to help children recover more quickly. The uptick in illnesses serves as a reminder for families to stay vigilant during the winter months.
