A Plano pharmacist has been sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison and ordered to forfeit $405 million in assets for orchestrating a massive fraud scheme against the Department of Labor.

Dehshid "David" Nourian, 62, and his associates owned and operated three pharmacies in Fort Worth and Arlington. Prosecutors say they conspired to pay doctors to prescribe medically unnecessary compound creams to injured federal workers.

The creams, which were mixed in pharmacy backrooms by untrained teenagers, cost approximately $15 each to produce. However, the government was billed as much as $16,000 per prescription.

Several federal workers testified that the creams were not only ineffective but sometimes caused rashes and other adverse reactions.

Nourian's conviction is part of a broader effort by federal authorities to crack down on healthcare fraud and protect taxpayer dollars.
