A Ponder High School senior died Thursday after suffering critical injuries in a sledding accident on Monday in Denton County, school and public safety officials confirmed.
Caden Nowicki, 17, was riding in a kayak being towed by an all-terrain vehicle on Amyx Hill Road when the kayak left the roadway and he was ejected into a metal fence, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Nowicki, a senior and varsity football player, was rushed to Medical City Denton Hospital after the crash and remained in critical condition before his death, school officials said.
His passing marks at least the third sledding-related teen fatality in North Texas this week amid winter weather conditions that have led to other serious injuries and deaths.
In the wake of the accident, Ponder ISD and local community members have organized support efforts for Nowicki’s family, including a memorial service and fundraisers to assist with expenses.
School leaders and state troopers continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash as officials reiterate safety warnings about winter activities and vehicle-pulled sledding.
