The Collin County city of Princeton is halting residential growth for four months in an attempt to ease the strain on the city's utilities and public services.

The pause comes as the city seeks to manage the challenges brought on by rapid expansion, Director of Public Works Tommy Mapp said. In 2005, Princeton's population was 4,000. Less than two decades later, it has grown to 28,000.

"With the moratorium, we're looking for a little bit of breathing room," he said. "Some time to reevaluate how we're growing, where we're growing, and how we're going to continue to grow into the future."

City officials are expected to use the pause to assess infrastructure needs and ensure sustainable growth as the city expands.
