Red Cross in "dire need" of blood donations after storm

The American Red Cross is asking for blood donations to make up for cancellations during winter weather last week. This month, the organization says more than 10,000 blood and platelet donations have been canceled.

"We are in dire need of making up that blood supply that we missed out on last week," says the Red Cross' Lisa Morgan.

Morgan says blood donations are necessary for trauma patients, so while donations have dropped, demand has stayed high with people being injured, but she also says demand is ongoing for treatments for other illnesses.

"It's not just people being injured on the road. It's also our cancer patients and other patients who depend on the blood supply every day, no matter if it is a winter storm," Morgan says.

The Red Cross is testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. At each blood drive or donation center, the organization checks the temperatures of donors and workers; social distancing is practiced; face masks are required. A complete list of precautions is available HERE.

"We really encourage people, if they're healthy and they're well, it's pretty and sunny out, find a blood drive in your area," Morgan says.

The Red Cross has scheduled dozens of blood drives across North Texas through March 15. Here is a list, organized by county:
