Dallas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is defending her past remarks amid questions about the tone of political rhetoric in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Critics have pointed to comments she made earlier this year comparing former President Donald Trump to “a wannabe Hitler.” Crockett insists those remarks were intended to warn constituents about threats to democracy and not to incite violence.
She told reporters this week that political leaders have a duty to speak plainly about the stakes in national politics, even if the language is blunt. “Holding people accountable for words they didn’t say, or meanings they didn’t intend, doesn’t move us forward,” she said.
The debate highlights a growing divide over how much responsibility elected officials should bear for the consequences of their rhetoric, especially in an already volatile political climate.
