The Richardson City Council has voted to put a $46 million city bond package on the May 6th ballot.
If voters approve the package, the money would be used to help cover the cost of repairs at Richardson City Hall. The building was damaged in a fire last August.
"An electrical failure sparked the blaze, which grew to the water customer service area and the information technology area," Richardson Mayor Mayor Paul Voelker said during his recent State of the City address. "Within minutes of receiving the call, fire crews were on scene and able to keep the flames from spreading throughout the building. But smoke, water and fire damage was significant enough to shut down the facility and force relocation of all services."
The City of Richardson is receiving money from its insurance policy to cover the cost of some repairs, but city officials say more money is needed to complete the project. They hope to combine the settlement funds with funds from previous voter-approved bonds and the $46 million bond package on the ballot this spring.
Crews have been surveying the damage at the building and recently presented a report to the City Council. They note that 3,000 square feet of the second level concrete slab needs to be replaced and the slab adjacent to a mechanical room needs to be replaced. Some interior walls and finishes were affected by the water used to extinguish the fire. Electrical systems were damaged along with some mechanical equipment and plumbing fixtures.
