Starting today, students and teachers in the Richardson Independent School District will no longer be required to wear face masks inside RISD buildings. District officials are still encouraging people to wear masks to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The district had re-adopted its mask mandate a few weeks ago as the number of COVID cases began to go up dramatically. At the time, administration officials had said they planned to let the mandate expire on Friday, January 28th - but they would also review case numbers as part of a decision on whether to keep it in place.
Their latest figures show that positive, active COVID cases in the Richardson ISD peaked on January 14th and have steadily gone down since then. New daily case numbers peaked on January 10th.
Officials say the RISD is past the point where they were worried about the ability to keep the schools open for in-person instruction.
The Richardson ISD had been offering COVID testing through a third party company on Mondays and Wednesdays, but those tests have been suspected because of supply problems.
