It's the first day of school for students in the Richardson ISD where students at one junior high are testing a no cell phone pilot program.
Richardson ISD officials floated a proposal to ban cellphone use in secondary schools. The kids could keep their phones but they would be locked in pouches while students were in school.
Many teachers say the cell phone ban would cut down on distractions and help students to concentrate better, but some parents say it's a safey risk and preventing kids from quickly accessing their phones in an emergency.
The district has adopted a plan to test the proposal at one school, Forest Meadow Junior High.
District leaders say they will study how the test program works before deciding if it will be implemented at other campuses.
