A new study by UT Southwestern Medical Center says "e-scooters" come with a real risk of serious injury.
Dr. Drew Sanders is an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at UT Southwestern. He and his colleagues studied records of people who were injured by scooters and went to Parkland Hospital.
"I wonder if the safest thing is not to ride them at all," Sanders said. "Absent that, wearing some sort of protective gear, not go at high speeds, and ride in designated areas where it's safer and they won't be in the path of pedestrians or be in the path of cars."
Sanders said he and other researchers decided to study the issue after they noticed a high number of injuries linked to the scooters.
From January 2017 to August 2020, the study identified 82 orthopedic injuries from scooters in Dallas. About half the patients had no insurance.
The study was published in the Journal of Orthopedic Business.
