The Salvation Army of North Texas is continuing its heat relief efforts as triple-digit temperatures persist across the region, providing cooling stations, water, snacks and other resources for people struggling to stay safe in the extreme heat.
Major Rob Webb, area commander for The Salvation Army of North Texas, said the organization has activated 13 cooling stations across the six counties it serves.
The stations are open during regular business hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and offer people a place to cool down, hydrate and get a snack before continuing with their day.
Webb said the heat can be especially dangerous for people experiencing homelessness, seniors, children, and those without adequate air conditioning.
So far, The Salvation Army has distributed more than 22,000 bottles of water and 3,600 snacks. More than 2,000 people have sought heat relief assistance through the organization.

The Salvation Army has also distributed about 100 box fans to people who may not have adequate cooling in their homes, with more fans still available at its cooling station locations.
In addition to the cooling stations, The Salvation Army operates four shelters in the area that may provide refuge from the extreme heat, depending on available capacity.
"This is such an important time to provide a refuge or resource for folks that may find themselves on the streets, uh, experiencing this extreme heat" he said. "The Salvation Army is happy that we're able to provide this resource to serve our community."
Webb said The Salvation Army uses weather conditions to determine when to activate its heat relief services. The organization generally responds when the forecast calls for temperatures of 100 degrees or higher for more than one day or when the heat index is expected to exceed 105 degrees for more than two consecutive days.
The services will continue as long as dangerous heat conditions persist.
Webb said the organization's mission extends beyond emergency weather relief, with programs and services offered year-round to help people facing poverty, addiction and homelessness.
