Scammers are trying to take advantage of people struggling to keep up with the rising energy costs.
With more and more people trying to rework their budgets to cover high energy bills, scammers are adding to the problem. They are calling people and saying their power will be cut off if they don't pay their bill.
The scammers are telling people to send money, usually on a pre-paid debit card to square their accounts and avoid being shut off.
If you get a call like that, hang up. If you've already been scammed, call the police. Energy companies must give Texas customers a 10-day-written-notice before sending a disconnection notice, and even then work with them on a payment plan or payment assistance. You will never be asked to make a payment on a pre-paid card.
