Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush is vowing to find someone new to operate the state's veterans homes.
The promise comes after reports show that seven of the homes had a COVID-19 fatality rate of at least 25%, well above the statewide average of 11% for nursing homes in Texas. The numbers come from an analysis of state data done by the Houston Chronicle and Texas Tribune. The report shows about 570 residents of the veterans' homes tested positive and 134 of them died.
Two for-profit companies operate the 9 veterans home under the control of the Veterans Land Board, which is part of the General Land Office's operations.
