Senator John Cornyn is sounding the alarm over voter turnout as he inches closer to a heated primary battle next month.

Cornyn says while some have argued a recent special election in Tarrant County should be a wakeup call for republicans, he sees the voter turnout of 15 percent to be a wakeup call to everyone.

"When too many people sit on the sidelines, the consequence is election results that are not actually representative of the people who are being governed by these officials," Cornyn said this week in a Senate floor speech.

Cornyn also spoke about another special Congressional election in the Houston area that had only 5.6 percent voter turnout.

"This is not just a warning sign to republicans, this is a warning sign to us all," Cornyn said.

Cornyn faces Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Congressman Wesley Hunt in the upcoming primary.
