The sexual assault charges against former Texas Rangers pitcher John Wetteland have been dropped, according to reports.

Wetteland had been accused of the sexual abuse of a child younger than 14. He was arrested in 2018, indicted in 2019 and last fall underwent a trial.

The jury could not reach a decision and a mistrial was declared.

Now court records show the State has decided against a retrial and a Denton County judge has signed an order dismissing the case and closing the file.

Wetteland lives in Trophy Club now, and police say the alleged abuse happened in Bartonville.

Wetteland was a coach for the Texas Rangers before joining the Washington Nationals in 2006. He has also pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos and New York Yankees.

Wetteland is a member of the Texas Rangers hall of fame.
