Members of the Southlake Anti-Racism Coalition showed up at the Carroll ISD School Board meeting last night, again pushing a district diversity plan.
"We can't let politics or lawsuits get in the way of protecting our students," one woman said. "A diversity and inclusion plan is not radical indoctrination, it is not CRT, and it is something that will benefit every Dragon in CISD."
"I really don't know what it will take for you to care," said another. "[This] won't be the last of me, won't be the last of any of us."
A few people took to the podium to speak out against a diversity plan, as well.
This is a very contentious issue for the community. In 2018, a video of Southlake students using racial slurs went viral. Since then, a group of parents has been pushing for the plan, but they were met legal opposition when parents who oppose the plan sued the district.
Superintendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter assured the crowd last night that student safety is number one priority, regardless of what happens with the lawsuit. He also says the district is working to make sure students feel included, and that they feel safe reporting discrimination.
"A lot of these testimonials reflect the fact that students didn't feel comfortable, or they didn't feel like something would be done," Dr. Ledbetter said at the meeting. "We're going to do what we have to do to correct that."
