The town of Venus might not even be around but for a group of generous townsfolk, who stepped in to save it.
Venus was once a growing town in Johnson County, and even had its own college. But the Great Depression hit Venus hard, and businesses closed one after another.
Soon, there was just one business left: a drugstore. The townspeople all chipped in to make sure it didn't close. That act was one of the things that saved Venus from becoming a ghost town.
The rebuild was slow. But by the year 2000, there were more than 900 people living in Venus. The population boomed to more than 2,900 by the year 2010. And today, Venus is home to more than 4,100.
