Texas education officials are holding a press conference this morning that could determine the future of the Fort Worth Independent School District, which has faced years of low academic performance at several campuses.
The Texas Education Agency has warned for months that the district could face state intervention if student achievement and accountability ratings do not improve.
Fort Worth ISD, one of the largest school systems in the state, serves roughly 70,000 students across more than 130 campuses.
Dozens of those schools have received repeated failing grades under the state’s accountability system, triggering mandatory improvement plans and close monitoring from state officials.
While the district has launched several turnaround initiatives, including leadership changes and new instructional programs, state data shows many campuses have continued to struggle.
The TEA has not confirmed whether Thursday’s announcement will include a formal takeover, but the agency’s recent actions in other districts—such as Houston ISD in 2023—have fueled speculation.
KRLD will provide live updates as soon as the Texas Education Agency releases details from this morning’s briefing.
