Friday marks two weeks until opening day of the State Fair of Texas.

The fair is continuing its controversial weapons ban following a shooting at the food court two years ago.

State Fair of Texas President Mitchell Glieber tells KRLD’s David Johnson that in today’s environment it makes sense.

“Really what we are trying to do, our number one priority is to create a safe environment for our fairgoers,” Glieber said. “We believe that in an event like this that it’s best practices.”

Several courts have tossed Attorney General Ken Paxton’s challenge to the policy however he is appealing.

“This will continue, I’m sure, we’ll see where it goes,” Glieber said. “They did try to pass legislation during this last session but it never made it anywhere close to the finish line.”

Glieber says the ongoing litigation will not prevent the Fair from keeping the policy in place this year.
