A suspected drunk driver is in custody after a traffic stop in Louisiana turned into a dramatic foot chase through swampy terrain, ending with the man being attacked by an alligator.
On Sunday, Louisiana State Police Troop B troopers responded to reports of a Toyota Supra driving recklessly on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in Jefferson Parish. The vehicle was later stopped on the elevated portion of Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Victor M. Rivas of Montz, showed signs of impairment during the DWI investigation.
Rivas fled on foot and jumped from the interstate into the swamp below. Troopers and St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office deputies searched for him and later spotted him walking along U.S. Highway 61. As officers approached, he ran back into a swampy area, where an alligator attacked him and caused injuries to both arms. Despite the injuries, Rivas continued fleeing before being located with the help of drone technology and taken into custody.
He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his arm injuries before being booked into jail. Rivas faces charges including second-offense DWI and resisting an officer. Additional warrants were issued for hit-and-run and careless operation connected to an earlier crash in Jefferson Parish. No officers or bystanders were injured.
The incident highlights the dangers of impaired driving, particularly in areas with wildlife hazards like Louisiana's swamps and bayous. Authorities continue to investigate.
