Heating up through Thursday, a little fog this morning south of DFW, no rain until late Thursday night into Friday morning, a brief cool-down Friday, and then right back to summer heat for the weekend. Those are your weather stories as we begin a new work week.
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Tuesday!
We're waking up to a low cloud deck across much of North Texas, nothing showing up on radar, light winds, and temperatures in the lower to middle 70s. Pretty typical for a mid-June morning.
High pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere, currently building to our west, will gradually expand over North Texas through Thursday. That will allow temperatures to steadily warm over the next few days. When you factor in the humidity, it'll feel about 8 degrees hotter than the actual air temperature.
Expect partly cloudy skies today with afternoon highs near 90 degrees. The warming trend continues Wednesday and Thursday with highs climbing into the mid-90s. Some locations west of the Metroplex could touch the 100-degree mark Thursday afternoon. Heat index values will approach 105 degrees, so be sure to stay hydrated and limit extended outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
Our next weather system arrives early Friday morning in the form of a cold front. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across Oklahoma Thursday evening and push south into North Texas while most of us are sleeping Friday morning.
Heavy rain, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and possibly some small hail will be the primary threats. At this point, I think most areas will see at least an inch of rain before the activity shifts south of the region by midday Friday.
Plan for a very messy Friday morning commute. Allow extra time to reach your destination. I'll have updates every 10 minutes from the KRLD Weather Center on NewsRadio 1080 KRLD AM.
The heaviest rain should sag south of Interstate 20 by noon Friday, followed by gradual clearing through the afternoon. A few lingering showers will remain possible. It will feel much different as temperatures struggle to climb above 82 degrees Friday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the cooler weather won't last long.
Saturday warms back up to around 90 degrees with a slight chance of an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Sunday looks mostly sunny and hot with highs returning to the mid-90s. Heat index values will once again climb above 100 degrees.
As for next Monday, forecast confidence is lower. Some forecast models suggest another round of showers and thunderstorms could move south out of Oklahoma late Monday into Tuesday, while other guidance keeps us completely dry.
Since that's still seven days away, there is plenty of time for the forecast to change.
Have a great day, stay hydrated, and enjoy the weather when you can—it's the only weather you've got!
