System-wide 'technology malfunction' affected Southwest flights, scheduling

UPDATE: 10:05 a.m.

Southwest requested that the FAA pause the airline's departures due to an internal technical issue at Southwest early Tuesday morning. The pause has now been fully canceled, according to the FAA.

Southwest Airlines says it's computer glitch has been fixed and flights have resumed.

A computer outage affected Southwest Airlines flights nationwide early Tuesday morning.

The Dallas-based airline said in a tweet that it was experiencing what it called an "intermittent technology issue" and "hopes to resume operations as soon as possible."

Reports from travelers at airports in Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee confirmed that some kind of issues were delaying flights.

Southwest requested a pause of departures from the FAA as it worked to resolve the issue.

Tweets from Southwest to frustrated passengers who were wondering what was going on said, "As of now, we do not have a time frame for when this will be resolved."

The union that represents Southwest Airlines pilots says there was a firewall failure that has locked-up the nationwide computer system, according to Casey Murray, the President of the Southwest Airlines Piolts Association.
