Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico holds a narrow two-point lead over Republican Ken Paxton as the general election approaches, according to a new survey conducted by Texas Southern University.

With less than 100 days until the November midterm election, the poll shows Talarico leading Paxton 47 percent to 45 percent. Political scientist Mark Jones, who conducted the survey, noted that the tight margin leaves the marquee Senate contest well within the poll's margin of error.

While Democrats hold a slight edge at the top of the ticket, Republican incumbents maintain stronger leads in down-ballot statewide races.

Gov. Greg Abbott holds a 6 percentage point lead over Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa, leading 49 percent to 43 percent. Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick maintains a 7-point cushion in his re-election campaign, leading Democratic opponent Vikki Goodwin 46 percent to 39 percent.
