Dallas (1080 KRLD)- The Greenville ISD elementary school teacher who put her foot on a Black student's neck is now out of a job.
"I accepted that teacher's resignation, effective immediately," says Greenville ISD Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins.
The subject of the unidentified teacher's resignation was included on a draft agenda of the Greenville ISD Board of Trustees' April 27 meeting.
"She was informed that her name would be included, as is required by law when proposing a termination," says Dr. Liggins. "And at that time through our attorney, she submitted a letter of resignation."
The photo of the teacher's foot on the Black student's neck caused outrage among the community -- but not the boy's mother.
In media interviews and on Facebook, she has maintained that the teacher and her son were joking with one another and that the teacher should not lose her job.
"I've spoken to the mother personally, as well as saw it on the news as many others have, and it did not play a factor at all," says Dr. Liggins. "I respect the mother immensely, and she has every right to have her opinion and to share it. That did not come into play as part of our investigation."
The Greenville ISD will still report the incident to the State Board of Education, which will determine what action it may take regarding her teaching certificate.
In the meantime, Dr. Liggins will work to ensure that incidents like this one never happen again.
"We will be addressing the overall seriousness of this issue with our staff," Dr. Liggins says, "and we'll develop strategies to address it in the future."
