A North Texas man is being recognized by the Carnegie Hero Fund for his quick thinking and bravery last year on a highway in Kansas.

Sean James of Fate is one of 18 people to receive the Carnegie Medal. It is given to civilians who risk death or serious injury while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.

James was driving through Kansas in June of 2022 when he witnessed an SUV drive off the road and crash into a tree. He stopped and ran towards the vehicle. He pulled an 8-year-old girl to safety. He then went back for her younger brothers, ages 6 and 2, even though flames and smoke were spreading through the vehicle.

The kids' mother, who had been driving, was pinned in the SUV. A highway patrol officer in Kansas determined that James could not have rescued her, given the extent of the fire that spread through the SUV. She died. The oldest girl suffered partial paralysis from her injuries in the crash but survived. The two boys also suffered injuries in the crash but have recovered.

The Carnegie Hero Fund is recognizing 18 people with its current round of awards. In addition to the Carnegie Medal, they will receive a financial grant. The fund was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1904.
