
Texans with loved ones in hurricane-stricken areas, like North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia, have struggled at times to reach them as Hurricane Helene's death toll rises to at least 130.
Sarah Fivecoat, a Kaufman resident, said her grandmother and mother live in Asheville, North Carolina -- one of the hardest-hit areas. She last spoke with her mother just before the storm arrived.
"She had sent my brother and I a text message just letting us know the storm was coming through, but it was supposed to be gone later that afternoon," Fivecoat said. "And then it was crickets."
They eventually managed to reconnect after the storm.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said the state is still grappling with widespread power outages.
"We have power lines tangled up in trees and limbs," he said "It is dangerous to go in and try to clear that out yourself."
