The first "sales tax holiday" of 2022 is underway in Texas. The state has temporarily eliminated sales taxes on many items that qualify as emergency supplies.
"Items like axes, batteries, can openers, fire extinguishers and first aid kits" said Kevin Lyons with the Texas State Comptroller's Office.
The sales tax holiday was adopted to encourage people to be prepared for the various natural disasters that can strike Texas - including wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes and ice storms.
Generators that are priced under $3,000 are on the tax-free list. So are emergency ladders and hurricane shutters. The Texas State Comptroller's Office has the full list of eligible items posted on its web site
The sales tax holiday runs through midnight on Monday, April 25th.
"We think that Texans will save about $1.5 million in local and state sales taxes," Lyons said.
