For the first time in nearly three decades, North Texas voters in the 12th Congressional District will elect a new representative, following the retirement of longtime Republican incumbent Kay Granger.

Granger, who was first elected to Congress in 1996, has served 14 terms representing a district that includes parts of Fort Worth and stretches across much of Parker County. She chose not to seek re-election this year, leaving the seat open for the first time in 28 years.

Republican Craig Goldman, a six-term member of the Texas House of Representatives, won the GOP primary and is vying to fill the vacancy. Goldman has made border security a central issue of his campaign, arguing that the federal government’s most important duty is to protect its citizens. He has criticized the Biden administration for its handling of immigration.

On the Democratic side, Trey Hunt, a homeless housing coordinator for Tarrant County’s mental health services agency, is running to prioritize abortion access. Hunt argues that protecting women's rights to make decisions about their own bodies, health, and futures is a fundamental issue of human rights.
